I was only 8 when I did my first confession. The door opened and the girl before me hung her head as she walked out, her lips moving in the shape of ‘hail mary’. Heart beating fast I entered the box. My toes grazing the floor whilst I tried to look through the metal gauze. The silhouette of a man appear and a deep voice asked me ‘how have you sinned?’. I had prepared this, ‘I stole biscuits’. He told me the prayers to say for my absolution and I left.
I left more guilty than I had entered.
I lied, I hadn’t stolen biscuits. I just really didn’t have anything else to say. Am I going to hell for lying to a priest?
